Ride for Sight traffic alert

Prepare to Ride for Sight.

The Dis-Chem Ride for Sight, the largest cycling event in Ekurhuleni, will take place on February 16, and the organisers would like to caution residents about traffic disruptions between 5.30am and 1.30pm.

The event starts and finishes at the Boksburg City Stadium, in Jubilee Road, Boksburg.

The North bound side of Jubilee Road will be used for cyclists only and will be closed to vehicles.

The South bound side will be used for two-way traffic.

The route then goes west into Barry Marais Road and accesses the R554 via Essenhout and Keurboom streets.

The route continues west on the R554 to Alberton and then turns south on the M61.

The cyclists return to Boksburg on the R23 and the R554, past Carnival City.

More than 5 000 cyclists will be using these routes and residents are advised to avoid using these roads if possible.

There will be cyclists on both sides of North Boundary Road (R554) for short periods, on the Heidelberg, Leondale and R103 roads, between 8.15am and 10am.

“Please use extreme caution as cyclists ride faster than you think — 30km to 40km per hour is not unusual,” said race secretary Claudette Medefindt.

“Come out and watch the cream of South Africa’s cyclists in action and give them a warm Ekurhuleni welcome.”

Late entries will be taken at Tour De Frans, on Atlas Road, on Saturday, February 15, for the 62km event and, possibly, for the 116km event, if available.

This is also a last-minute reminder for cyclists to pump their tyres, wash their training shoes and refine their final strategies and techniques before the race.

All proceeds go towards fighting retinal blindness and the race is unique in that all helpers on the day are volunteers.
