Young golfer to take on the world

Young local golfer heads for World Championships.

Germiston’s Liam van Deventer has qualified to compete in the US Kids Golf European Championship and the US Kids Golf World Championship.

To enable Liam to compete internationally, and to help him on the road to his long term goal of playing in the Masters Championship and The Open Championship, a golf day fund-raiser will be held at the Germiston Golf Club on April 1.

The US Kids Golf European Championship will take place from May 27 to 29, in Gullane, Scotland.

Liam will compete in the 11 years age group, at the Craigielaw Golf Club.

The US Kids Golf World Championships are scheduled to take place from July 31 to August 2, in North Carolina, America.

For the world championships he will compete in the 12 year age group.

Liam will have the opportunity to qualify for the international team who will compete against the USA for the World Cup.

This World Cup is a prestigious event and is open only to boys and girls who are 12 years of age.

The youngster has participated in the past three US Kids Golf World Championships and improved from 75th place in 2011 to 29th in 2012, and 19th in 2013.

He also played in the US Kids Golf European Championships in 2010, and placed 12th and seventh in 2011.

During the US Kids Golf European Championship, in 2012, he finished 11th, and will return this year, after skipping the tournament due to school commitments, last year.

Each year he competes against the top 150 boys from all over the world in his age group, and his latest scores over the three rounds in 2013 were 76-72-72.

The St Catherine’s School student was selected, last year, to represent Central Gauteng in the annual quadrangular tournaments.

Liam has moved provinces, this year, and is currently attempting to qualify for the Ekurhuleni team.

So far, he has played in four tournaments and won all four, well on his way to qualifying for the team.

Liam has set goals for himself for 2014: he would like to be scratch handicap golfer by the end of this year;

he would like to win the US Kids Golf European Championships, and finish in the top 10 in the US Kids Golf World Championships.

For the fund-raiser, the first tee-off time will be at 11am, with a Stableford format (four-ball), two scores to count.

The entrance fee per four ball is R1 200, and sponsorship per hole is R5 000.
