Young athlete conquers Championships

Local athlete prospers.

Christelle Grobler, a Grade Six pupil at Laerskool Oosterkruin, took part in the Gauteng Primary Schools Athletics Championships, on March 1-2, at the L C de Villiers Stadium, in Pretoria.

Grobler, u-12, represented Ekurhuleni North.

She won the u-12 shot put event by throwing 11.17m — a new record.

She also took part in the discus event, where she qualified to compete in the South African Schools Athletics Championships, in Paarl, Cape Town, on March 19-22.

At the Gauteng Championships, on March 1, Grobler broke the shot put record during the semi-finals, by throwing a distance of 10.90m.

During the finals, on March 2, she broke the previous day’s record on her first attempt, by throwing 11.12m.

During her second attempt, in the finals, she increased the distance by throwing 11.17m.

The youngster collected a total of 1 791 Athletics Performance Evaluation (APE) points for Ekurhuleni North with her individual performances in discus and shot put combined.

During last year’s South African Schools Athletics Championships, she was ranked number five out of 50 top athletes in South Africa.

Grobler will represent Gauteng Primary Schools at the South African Schools Athletics Championships, later this month.
