Henning to defend his title

Don't miss all the action at FightStar 8.

FightStar 8 will have its first title defense in FightStar history as Tjaart Henning the current FightStar featherweight champion defends his title against the dangerous all round skill set of Jaydee van der Merwe, on July 26.

“After van der Merwe’s impressive fight with Jasen van der Merwe for the bantamweight belt at FightStar 7, I felt that he should defiantly get another shot immediately.

“That fight was one of the best five round wars I have ever seen and I still have fans telling me about it,” said FightStar matchmaker, Grant Oliff.

“Henning proved that he is a true champion when he disposed of Mamoudou “Frenchie” Toure to gain the belt.

“This fight is going to be a massive test for both guys, and I expect the fans to be talking about this one for years to come, as well.”

Henning fought Toure at FightStar 7 in what was called an absolute war for the featherweight title taking the win and claiming the belt.

Now, just two months after becoming the champion, Henning aims to make history as being the first champion to defend his title and be the first to successfully do it at the same time.

“It’s a great honour to fight for an organisation such as FightStar, I just like fighting.

“It doesn’t matter to me that I’m defending.

“I realise that it’s the first time a belt is being defended but it only makes it even better for me to be a part of FightStar in this fight.

“I look forward to making history,” Henning said.

FightStar 8 takes place at St John’s Hellenic Hall, situated at the corner of Lobelia and Wychwood roads in Primrose.

Doors open at 6pm and the fights start at 6.30pm.
