Dinwiddie United FC are inviting all soccer fanatics to join their ranks.
ormulated in May, the club currently have 78 players, aged between nine and 35, and two coaches, Percy Matlatse and Daniel Pekane.
Matlatse and Pekane also manage the club.
“One of our short term goals is to join the ELFA League next season, as the current season is almost over,” said Matlatse.
He added that, because they are not affiliated to any league at the moment they play only friendly games, which also serve as great preparation for the season.
The club’s u-15 team were also formulated in May and, according to Matlatse, this came about because he and Pekane saw great talent and to reduce drug usage in Dinwiddie.
“We are unemployed and figured we had a lot of time in our hands to uplift our community and make a difference,” he explained.
The Dinwiddie club are not only in search of players, but also in need of funds.
“A Germiston-based company, Babore, sponsored us with two sets of kit and other training equipment and we are grateful for that,” said Matlatse.
The club are in need of more sponsorship as the players have to share the kit and more training equipment is required to help them prepare for the league.
“We are currently running the club from our own pockets and it’s not that easy because, as I have already mentioned, we are unemployed and the little we get we put into the club; we would really appreciate any form of sponsorship,” Matlatse explained.
“However, despite the financial challenges, we want to make the club the best academy on the East Rand and in the country at large.”
Practices are held from Tuesday to Friday, at Dinwiddie High School.
“Training is split into two sessions; from 3.30pm to 5pm we train the u-11, u-13 and the u-15 teams, and from 5pm we train the u-17s and the first team until dark, since we don’t have lights,” added Matlatse.
