The Ekurhuleni Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, in partnership with Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA), will host their inaugural athletics trials on February 28, at the Germiston Stadium.
“The Ekurhuleni Athletics Trials are aimed at identifying athletics talent among the young athletes in Ekurhuleni,” said CGA’s Mbalenhle Ngema.
The trials are scheduled to commence at 8am and run until 5pm.
The day’s events will include discus, high jump, javelin, 400m and 300m hurdles, 1 500m steeplechase and a 5 000m walk.
“The search for talent in Ekurhuleni has been motivated by the need to contribute to national teams and improve the performances of team South Africa at international level,” explained Ngema.
“The municipality has endorsed the idea of establishing an athletics sports academy, which will give support to all identified talented athletes from Ekurhuleni.”
“In order to ensure that the talent recognised during this year’s athletics programme is not lost, the municipality’s sports academy section has agreed with CGA to channel all the identified athletes from the trials.
“This will ensure the athletes’ performances are ranked with all athletics performances in Gauteng, which will, in turn, ensure that all athletes performing at a high level are channeled to the sports academy for support and further development.”
The trials will target all athletes between the ages of 14 and 16, both boys and girls.
