Over 100 junior paddlers participated in sprint lanes, in the Gauteng Canoe Union School League Sprint Race, hosted by Victoria Lake Canoe Club (VLC), recently.
There was a marked improvement in the paddlers’ performances throughout the day.
A number of paddlers from VLC’s development programme participated in their first ever canoe race and were very successful.
Ayanda Mgwenya did very well in two of the races, however, choppy waves unseated her in one sprint, cheating her of a podium position.
However, she still managed to earn 15 points for her year’s points accumulation.
Juniors in the school age groups paddle at regular races throughout the year, earning points for completion of these events.
Accumulation of the points over the year helps to identify top individuals, as well as top primary school, high school and club canoeists.
Among those spotted at the race were new paddlers from Germiston South Primary and Colin Mann Primary who also enjoyed their first race.
The SA Schools Inter-Provincial Competition is scheduled to take place in Roodeplaat, from April 30 to May 2.
