Skills tested at championships

Juniors make club proud at competition.

The Tebbutts Mixed Martial Arts Academy members took part in the Kickboxing Championship held in Kempton Park, recently.

“We had 21 members attend the competition , mostly juniors, and for most it was their first time competing, but they did very well,” said the owner and head coach at the club, Master Alex Tebbutt.

“Among other things, the members were tested in point and continuous fighting and physical weapons.

“We scooped 52 medals, and that just goes to show that wherever we go we always do excel.
“I am proud of all the members, their performance was excellent.”

Tebbutt also told the GCN that he is pleased with the increase in the number of people joining the club.

“We have a family joining the club,” he said.

“The family is moving to Germiston from Cape Town and, because they want to carry on with kickboxing, they evaluated a few clubs within the area and concluded that they want to join us.

“They said they like what they saw and enjoyed the atmosphere here at the club.”

Despite the academy’s recent achievement, Tebbutt said the members are still hard at training.

“We don’t let our achievements overwhelm us into relax mode, we always strive to improve and do better,” he said.

“The South African Championships will take place in July, in Pretoria; it is a big tournament that we are looking forward to and preparing hard for.”

In other news, the club is currently collecting food, clothes and toys to donate to the Loerie Youth Centre, in Bronkhorstspruit.

“Anybody is welcome to help donate to this worthy cause; considering that it is winter, members of the community can, among other things, donate blankets,” said the club’s Sensei Cassie Stadler.

“We are also looking at donating to and visiting local children’s homes.

“If you know of a local children’s home that you think might need our attention, please let us know, we have to learn to give back to the community.”

According to Tebbutt, more people are welcome to join the club.

“Whether you want to learn kickboxing or just want to keep fit, you are welcome, as we have fitness classes that were introduced at the beginning of the year,” he said.

“Our fitness classes are held from Monday to Thursday, from 6-7pm and every Saturday from 7-8am.

“The kickboxing lessons are also held from Monday to Thursday, from 7-8pm, after the fitness sessions.

“The members also take part in the fitness classes and it’s working wonders, as one can see how fit they are during tournaments.”

Tebbutt added that he is proud of every aspect of the club.

“The standard of the club has improved and the atmosphere is great; we are a family,” he explained.

“There is a lot of growth, both the juniors and seniors, I guess we are doing something good – like I said, we are a family and help each other during practise and at tournaments.

“Among other things, we have Spur nights and movie nights which also help us to bond .

“We are transparent in everything we do; there are parents who sit in at our practise sessions and we promote this, parents can come and watch their children in action, it helps motivate the children.”
