Fourth spot for local paddler

Gauteng paddlers have started training for major canoeing events.

Despite it being winter and the cold water, Gauteng canoeists have kicked off their training in preparation for the major canoeing events which take place later in the year.

Florida Lake Canoe Club hosted a 30km race from Daleside to Meyerton, on the Klip River, last Sunday, to provide paddlers with the opportunity to improve their fitness, as well as for newer paddlers to have the chance to obtain points and experience before taking on the longer, tougher, bigger races.

Anton Nel, a member of the Victoria Lake Canoe Club (VLC), based at Germiston Lake, where he also enjoys sailing, finished the river race in two hours 40 minutes, in fourth position in the sub-master age category, just missing a podium position.
