Vital win for Germiston

Germiston City Cricket Club continue their winning streak in the Saturday Fourth League of the Easterns Cricket League.

The Germiston City Cricket Club travelled to Bedfordview to take on their local rivals, the Bedfordview Cricket Club, on Saturday.

The team walked away the victors of the Easterns Cricket League’s Saturday Fourth League match, with a six wicket win.

“It was an absolute humdinger of a game and a must-win for both sides to have at least one hand on the league title.

“The Bedfordview Cricket Club is one of those local teams who always keep our players on their toes,” said David Ungerer, of the Germiston City Cricket Club.

With Germiston’s previous wins the team entered the game with 40 log points, having played 12 games, while Bedfordview had 36 points with one game in hand.

Germiston won the toss and elected to field first.

The home team was held to 59 runs with three wickets down after 17 overs when the teams left the field for a drinks break.

“We were disappointed with our opening fielding attempts, having dropped four catches,” said Ungerer.

Determined to improve their fielding, the visiting team went back to work and managed to hold Bedfordview to 196 runs, in their allotted overs, with four wickets in hand.

The team’s top bowler for the day was Jacques Nel, who took three wickets for 45 runs in his seven overs.

It was then Germiston’s turn to bat, chasing the 196 run total set by the home side.

“We felt we had our backs against the wall after losing our first wicket, that of Jacques Nel, in the opening over, and with two more wickets following soon after,” Ungerer said.

However, the 144 run partnership between Rudolph Swart and Ungerer allowed the club to turn the match around, winning the match, with six wickets in hand, in the final over.

Ungerer was the day’s top batsman, with an exceptional 90 runs, not out, off 65 balls.

Thrilled with the victory the team now turns their focus to this Saturday’s Fourth League away match against the Wattville Cricket Club.
