Thokoza Auditorium to host continental karate tournament
Thokoza Auditorium in Katlehong will on Saturday, March 27, host a continental karate tournament.
The annual event is organised by African Full Contact Karate Organisation (AFCKO). Five countries from Africa, including Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Cameroon, Nigeria and Lesotho, are expected to take part.
This is the fourth edition of the tournament. The third edition was held on May 28 last year at the same venue.
Sensei Thulani Sibisi, from Katlehong Dojo, said the purpose of the tournament is to help those karatekas who are struggling financially.
“We want them to get a taste of high-level tournaments. We understand that they like to compete with the best karatekas from outside the country, but cannot attend due to financial issues. So we have decided to bring international full-contact style stars to their own township. Competing with international karatekas helps local karatekas to improve their fighting skills because they learn from the best,” said Sibisi.
He said Ncamisile Nzama (22) is expected to excel in the u-65kg ladies’ event.
Among the important people who will be present on the day are:
*Sensei Mabhiyoza Nene of Bakers Dojo, from Umlazi
*Shihan Collen Sedwaba of Dawn Park Dojo, in Boksburg
*Shihan Simphiwe Dlulani of Umtata Dojo, from East London
*Sensei Samson Moripo, from Harare, Zimbabwe
*Sensei Thomas Makane of Matlosane Dojo, from North West.
Sibisi said participants are expected to pay a R150 participation fee.
The entrance at the door is free.
He said all karatekas from Gauteng are invited to take part.
