Young athletes shine at nationals

Christelle Grobler (15), from Solheim, and Clarissa le Roux (13), from Homestead, recently represented Gauteng at the National Athletics Championships, held in Pretoria.

Talented young athletes Christelle Grobler (15), from Solheim, and Clarissa le Roux (13), from Homestead, recently qualified at the Central Gauteng Sub Youth Athletics Championships to represent Gauteng at the Gauteng Championships and National Athletics Championships.

The Gauteng Championships were held on November 4, at Ruimsig Stadium, in Roodepoort.

Both athletes took part in shot-put and discus, in the u-15 and u-13 age groups respectively.

The girls both secured the top spot in their age groups in the discus competition, with throws that reached a distance of 39m.

Grobler also received a gold medal in shot-put, while le Roux received a silver medal.

The young athletes then travelled to the Pilditch Stadium in Pretoria, on November 18, where they competed in the National Athletics Championships.

This year marked Grobler’s sixth year and le Roux’s third year competing in the championships.

Both athletes have clinched podium positions in previous events and this year was no different.

Grobler broke the u-15 national shot-put record of 13.98m three times during the competition and was crowned as the National Champion for 2017 with a final distance of 15.45m.

She also received a silver medal in the u-15 discus with a throw of 41.7m.

Le Roux also shone at the championships, receiving a silver medal in the u-13 discus with a distance of 39m, and a bronze medal in the u-13 shot-put with a distance of 12m.

Both athletes were thrilled with their results.
