Bears end year on a high

The Bears Rugby League Club faced Pretoria Bulls Rugby League Club in their weekly Rhino League Cup match, on Saturday.

The Bears Rugby League Club continued their successful Rhino League Cup campaign with another victory.

With an 80-10 victory over the Silver Backs Rugby League Club, on November 3, under their belts the club travelled to Grizzlies Rugby Club for their match against Pretoria Bulls Rugby League Club, on Saturday.

“The club was three players down for this match as three of our young players have been suspended following a fight,” said Andries van der Merwe, chairperson for the Bears.

Despite this setback, the club, which is currently top of the league, dominated the match and came out on top with a score of 42–36.

This win means the Bears will face Tuks Rugby League Club in the season’s semi-finals in January.

“I am very proud of the club’s achievements throughout the season,” said van der Merwe

“We have grown so much as a club and a special thanks goes to coach Steven van Zyl for the sacrifices he has made and the effort he puts into this team.”

Van der Merwe thanked all the players, their families and the club’s supporters for their unwavering support.

“Once again thank you to our sponsor Mahestic Pools, without the support of Hennie Stander, we wouldn’t be able to participate in and enjoy this lovely sport,” he said.

During the December break the club will focus on preparing for the finals of the season, and will hold their year-end function which will honour this season’s outstanding players, including Dieter de la Port, Robin Howell, Louki Koekmoer, van der Merwe and Leuen Cobus.
