Spectators drawn to the national rowing competition in Germiston

The RMB National Squad, South Africa's senior Olympic rowing team, also graced the event as part of their preparation for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Victoria Lake Rowing Club hosted the 116th edition of the RMB VLC National Sprints Regatta on January 27 to 28 at Germiston Lake.

The competition showcased a diverse range of talent, from school-level rowers to seasoned master rowers.

St Bernedicts, Jeppe Boys and Germiston High were some of the schools from the area who also participated in the regatta.

VLC paddlers also competed.

The RMB National Squad, South Africa’s senior Olympic rowing team, also graced the event as part of their preparation for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Darryl Williams, chair of Victoria Lake Rowing Club, said, “We were eagerly anticipating another successful RMB VLC National Sprints Regatta and we are happy with the success of the event.

Collen, Hellen and Patience Madziro had a wonderful time at the RMB VLC National Sprints Regatta over the weekend.

“The presence of our national rowers also added a special significance to the event, especially since its an Olympic year.”

Tiago Loureiro, head coach of the RMB National Squad, believes that the RMB VLC National Sprints Regatta is an opportunity for the community to come together and compete in a short course.

Rowers and spectators came out in their numbers over the weekend for the RMB VLC National Sprints Regatta that took place in Victoria Lake, Germiston.

“This regatta makes racing more spectator-friendly while exposing junior, student, under-23 and master rowers to the RMB National Squad,” said Loureiro.

Grant Dodds, RMB National Squad Technical Performance Manager, thanked RMB for its long-standing support of the Sprint National Championships.

“We really value the support from RMB that makes this all possible. It’s a vital event for the ongoing development of the sport. Being over 1000m, the racing is always incredibly close. It is always a real highlight of the rowing calendar,” said Dodds.

The results were not finalised at the time of going to print.

Genevieve, Storm and Manuela Stewart were at the RMB VLC National Sprints Regatta held in Victoria Lake, Germiston.
