Devin Bourbon, a young karateka from Dawnview, is gearing up for the opportunity of a lifetime – representing South Africa at the KSI Karate World Championships in Finland next year.
Training under the esteemed Ballossini Kimura Shokokai International (KSI), Bourbon is seeking sponsorship to cover his travel and competition costs.

“For the first four years, I was at a dojo practising a different style. Switching to KSI felt like finding a family – the environment and training have been incredible,” Bourbon shared.
Bourbon recently graded for selection to the South African squad set to compete in Finland by June 2025.
While the results are expected early next year, the Reddam House Bedfordview student remains hopeful and determined.
Apart from karate, the 15-year-old excels in hockey, swimming, soft boxing and touch rugby.
He has received numerous accolades, including a gold certificate for participation in sports.

Bourbon’s karate achievements are equally impressive. He holds KSI provincial full colours and a junior black belt, awarded at a ceremony on December 10. His competition history includes:

• Silver medals at the national championships in 2022 and 2023 and bronze in 2024.
• A second-place finish in kata at the 2023 KSI Karate World Championships in Cape Town.
• Gold and silver medals at the Kimura Cup competitions.
•Participation in the 2022 Bushido Challenge.
He also holds referee certifications in kumite and kata.
“My resumé speaks for itself,” Bourbon said confidently. “I believe when the results are out, I will represent my country with pride in Finland.”
The trip holds personal significance for Bourbon, as it would be his first time travelling internationally.
“The championships aren’t just about competing – I’ll also train and learn from senseis from around the world,” he explained.
To fund his trip, Bourbon has launched a raffle, raising R2 000, while his dojo is organising fundraising initiatives to assist other competitors.
