Kruinhof residents get Christmas special

Kruinhof residents pampered with a special meal and groceries.

Dare-to-Care soup kitchen hosted its year-end Christmas special at Kruinhof Retirement Village on November 7.
The residents were gifted with meals and dessert before taking home grocery hampers.

The hampers included rice, flowers and soup, to mention a few.

Last July, in celebration of Mandela Day, Dare-to-Care soup kitchen inaugurated a recreation centre at the retirement village.

The Kruinhof Knitting Circle was later formed by residents of the village. This was a highlight as the centre has become a hub of creativity and community spirit.

The initiative was made possible after a storage space was remodelled into a recreational centre earlier this year with the help of the Dare-to-Care soup kitchen and its supporters.

The knitting group, led by Pat Beukes, has focused on creating items for charitable causes, including crocheted blankets and teddy bears.

During the celebration on November 7, Jennie Smith from Helping Hands-from the Heart handed over knitted phone pouches to the elderly to keep their phones safe.

Vanessa Spassov, founder of Dare-to-Care soup kitchen, handed over the groceries. She thanked all the parties involved in making the lunch and grocery packages possible.

“All thanks to Franco de Sousa from Bedford Build It for working with us. His commitment to serving the community does not go unnoticed.

“During the Mandela Day celebration and opening of the centre, he promised to be more involved in the next event and he kept his promise.” Franco donated the buckets of groceries.

“Residents from Bedfordview and Edenvale helped by donating more grocery buckets and groceries to fill grocery bags to make up the numbers.

Jennie Smith, Dare-to-Care soup kitchen founder Vanessa Spassov and Jean Badenhorst share a moment after handing over the groceries.

“The day was a success. The village has had its challenges but residents have persevered. We wish them a merry Christmas and happy festive seasons,” said Spassov.
