Germiston athlete gets ready for the year

Germiston athlete Ameenat Fagbemi kicked off the athletics season with an impressive personal best in the Women’s U20 100m at the Athletics Gauteng North (AGN) League.
The 19-year-old clocked an outstanding 11.88 seconds during Track and Field League 1 at Pretoria’s Pilditch Stadium.
Her performance marks an improvement from her previous best of 11.92 seconds, achieved at last year’s Sasolburg event.

At the North West University Top 30, she also excelled in the 200m earning third place.
A well-rounded achiever, Fagbemi matriculated from Edenglen High School with leadership colours, half colours for academics, distinctions in geography and English, and accolades as the best girl athlete and best overall athlete.
Eager for the upcoming Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) season, Fagbemi entered the AGN League to assess her fitness and readiness.
Describing the event as a “fun competition” she relished competing against some of the country’s top athletes.
“I wasn’t happy with my performance in the 200m earlier that day, so I knew I had to excel in the 100m to make up for it,” said Fagbemi.
She highlighted the impact of last year’s injury on her determination and mental health, adding, “My coach’s dedication during holiday training sessions helped me stay fit and ready to compete.”
With dreams of representing South Africa on the international stage, Fagbemi remains focused on her goals.

“Next year, I’ll transition to senior competitions. This year, my aim as a junior is to qualify for national and international events,” she explained.
Fagbemi plans to participate in league meets and Grand Prix events leading up to April.
Balancing her athletics career with her academic pursuits, she is set to begin a degree in Geophysics at the University of Johannesburg, supported by a scholarship.
“It’s going to be a hectic year, but I’m ready for the challenge,” said Fagbemi.
