Central Gauteng Athletics hosts first race of 2025 at Germiston Stadium

Cheswill Johnson of UJ jumped a distance of 8.17m to win his event.

Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) hosted the first league of the 2025 Track and Field season at Germiston Stadium on January 25.

The event was well-supported by various CGA clubs, athletes from neighbouring provinces, and participants from neighbouring countries.

One of the day’s highlights was the senior men’s long jump where South African long jump champion Cheswill Johnson of UJ achieved a distance of 8.17m.

Koketso Ramagaga of VUT secured second place with a jump of 6.69m, while Simon Tsilo of Nedbank took third place with a jump of 6.66m.

In the senior men’s 100m race, Ngoni Makusha delivered an impressive performance, clocking 10.22 seconds to dominate the race.

UJ athlete Matthew Ban Rooijen finished second with a time of 10.62 seconds, and Ethan Burger claimed third place with a time of 10.78 seconds.

The senior women’s 100m category also showcased remarkable performances, with UJ athletes leading the race.

Kayla la Grange secured first place, sprinting to the finish line in 12.10 seconds, followed by her teammate Bophele Seoe in 12.32 seconds. Liandi le Roux, also representing UJ, finished third with a time of 12.40 seconds.

In the senior men’s 5 000m event, the final race of the day, Calvin Sibusiso Msibi of UJ led the race to finish in 14:45.50.

Bennett Seloyi of Waterfall finished second clocking 14:50.96, and in third position was Jabulane Ncamane in 14:58.23.
