Athlete dominates 400m hurdles in Germiston
Over 1000 athletes participated, aiming to improve their times to qualify for the National Track and Field Championships.
Sabelo Dhlamini fell just 0.2 seconds short of the world championships qualifying time after clocking 48.73 in the senior men’s 400m hurdles.
This came after Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) hosted the final league meet of the 2025 CGA Track and Field season on February 22 at Germiston Stadium.

One of the most thrilling performances of the day was the senior men’s 400m hurdles, where Dhlamini secured an impressive win in 48.73, narrowly missing the world championships standard.

However, he recorded a personal best and the fastest world-leading time in the 400m hurdles this season.
His time is now among the top 10 fastest ever recorded in South Africa for the event.
CGA’s well-known 400m sensation, Shirley Nekhubui, dominated the senior women’s 400m event, clocking 52.51 to secure the gold medal.
The province expects exceptional performances from Nekhubui this season and is confident she will defend her national title.
Her teammate, Precious Molepo, secured silver with a time of 54.74, while the bronze medal went to Marlene van der Linde of Boxer, who finished in 59.23.
The senior men’s high jump saw the University of Johannesburg (UJ) dominate the event.

Mpho Links soared to victory with a jump of 2.17m, followed by his teammate Justin Louwrens in second place with 2.05m.
Another UJ athlete, Nyelele Kalteho, claimed third place with a 2.00m jump.
Among the most anticipated events of the day was the senior men’s 5 000m, which featured over 30 athletes at the starting line.

Spectators were kept on the edge of their seats as top provincial talents, including Phemelo Ntoe, Boikanyo Motlhamme, Sibusiso Msibi, and Zenzile Pheko, battled for supremacy.
Unfortunately, Ntoe suffered a sprain during the race and had to withdraw, leaving the remaining three athletes to fight for victory.
“The race was decided in the final lap, with Boikanyo Motlhamme taking the win in 14:35.01.
“His teammate Sibusiso Msibi settled for second place in 14:37.93, while third place went to Zenzile Pheko of Kopano, who finished in 14:46.90,” said CGA PR representative Nongcebo Siziba.
“We now turn our focus to the 2025 Track and Field Youth to Senior Provincial Championships, which will take place from March 14 to 15.
