Top athletes shine at final CGA cross-country league

Central Gauteng Athletics wrapped up its 2025 cross-country league season with standout performances in Brakpan, as athletes raced for provincial selection ahead of the CGA Championships.

Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) hosted the final league of the 2025 cross-country season on July 26, at Brakpan.

The event saw enthusiastic participation from athletes across the province and delivered a day filled with fierce competition, determination, and athletic excellence.

With the provincial championships fast approaching, the final league served as a crucial opportunity for athletes to showcase their form and secure spots for provincial team selection.

In the girls U13 race, spectators were treated to an exciting contest. Ofentse Mothapo of Kopano delivered an outstanding run to take first place with a time of 10:33, demonstrating great composure and control.

She was followed by Nelly Longwe of Cool Running, who maintained a strong pace to finish second in 11:17. Minenhle Kgaphola of Langaville fought hard and secured third place with a time of 11:20.

Another standout performance came in the girls U16 2km race. Hermia Norman of Boxer dominated the event, setting a fast pace from the start and crossing the line in a convincing 07:07.

Mila Scholtz of 32GI pushed hard in the final stretch to take second place in 07:13, while Azaniah Lebe of Kopano finished third in 07:45.

The men’s U23 4km race was among the most competitive events of the day. Corne de Fouw, representing Boxer, ran a commanding race to finish in 12:56. Tshepo Letsolo of Cool Running showed smart race tactics to claim second in 13:03, narrowly ahead of Tshepo Motsoeneng of Boxer, who placed third in 13:07.

CGA cross-country chairperson Val Brentano said the completion of the league season now shifts attention to the upcoming 2025 CGA Provincial Championships, which will take place in August.

Brentano emphasised that athletes will be competing for a top-six position in order to qualify for selection to the provincial team that will represent Central Gauteng at the National Championships, scheduled for September 6 in Mpumalanga.

“Athletes are reminded of the selection criteria. They must have participated in at least three of the six leagues, in addition to the CGA Championships, to be eligible for selection,” said Brentano.
