Elsburg Eagles restructure to strengthen 2026 campaign

New management, coaches and a U20 team set to boost competitiveness in the Valke Merlin League.

The Elsburg Eagles Rugby Club started the year on a high note by announcing a structural reset for the 2026 season, appointing new management teams and head coaches across its senior squads and development teams to strengthen competitiveness in the Valke Merlin League.

The club is now formally structured into three entities: Seniors, juniors and golden oldies. Each entity will have its own committee reporting directly to the newly appointed executive committee.

“The reset introduces a streamlined reporting system, aligning all divisions under a single executive body for improved accountability and cohesion,” said Edwin Green, the executive club chairperson.

This year also marks the introduction of the U20 team, a milestone in the club’s development. The squad will be coached by Clinton Venter and Derick Brewis, who bring experience and a passion for nurturing young players

“We are excited to bring through the new young talent our region has to offer. This U20 team is vital to ensuring that the Eagles continue to grow stronger with every generation,” said Fritz.

The golden oldies team is ready to defend its 2025 accolade as the Golden Lions oldies team of the year. Their continued success reflects the club’s commitment to honouring tradition while embracing modern competitiveness.

“The Bald Eagles embody the spirit and heritage of the Eagles.Their recognition last year was a testament to their passion, and we look forward to seeing them shine again this season,” said the chairperson.

The junior seasonstarts in early May, with preparations underway to guarantee a strong campaign.

“Our juniors are the heartbeat of the club’s future. By expanding to every age group, we are investing in the next generation of Eagles,” said Swart.

The senior team received a fresh reset, with Brendan Grobbelaar appointed as the first team coach, bringing new energy and tactical focus. Francois Hugo will take the reins at the defending champions’ second team after captaining them to league winners in 2025.

“Our senior teams are the backbone of the club’s competitive edge. With Brendan and Francois leading the charge, we are confident of building on last year’s success and pushing higher in 2026 ,” said Venter.
