Vertec Dragons begin Fire and Fury Women’s League title defence

The Vertec Dragons will begin their Fire and Fury Women’s League title defence against the Unicorns when the second edition of the women-only draft-based T20 tournament gets underway in August.

The tournament opens with the Phoenix against the Valkyries on August 28 at Laerskool Impala, with the defending champions facing the Unicorns the next day at 13:00 at CBC Boksburg, where they will look to build on last year’s dominant campaign.

The Dragons lifted the inaugural title with a 41-run victory over the Gryphons, inspired by Miekie van Voorst’s unbeaten 133 off just 73 balls.

Van Voorst, who was named Cricket South Africa’s U19 Women’s T20 Player of the Year on July 16 and is currently leading the Baby Proteas in a series against Pakistan, will once again spearhead the Dragons.

This year’s tournament has expanded from four to six teams with the addition of the Valkyries and Pegasus. Nineteen matches will be played between August 28 and September 6 at Laerskool Impala and CBC Boksburg.

The player pool has also grown significantly. After featuring only Ekurhuleni-based cricketers in its inaugural edition, this year’s draft welcomed players from the Titans, North West, Mpumalanga and KZN Tuskers, raising the standard of competition.

Several South African junior internationals, including players currently representing the country in the Youth T20I series against Pakistan, are expected to feature.

Among the standout names already drafted are Benoni Northerns Women’s Player of the Year Marichelle Lubbe, youth international Ashleigh van Wyk, Tersia Owens and promising Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen all-rounder Bruzaan Goosen.

Tournament convenor Shannon McKelvey said the league continues to provide female cricketers with opportunities traditionally available to their male counterparts.

“Women’s cricket deserves the same opportunities, atmosphere and sense of occasion that men’s cricket enjoys. Fire and Fury is about creating that stage. The quality and diversity of talent on display promises to make this year’s tournament even more exciting,” she said.

McKelvey said feedback from last year’s event highlighted the tournament’s impact on player development.

“Many players told us their games improved significantly after playing both with and against stronger opposition. To keep creating opportunities, teams could retain only 50% of last year’s squads, allowing many new players to experience the tournament.”

Among the new features are two floodlit matches, giving many players their first taste of night cricket.
The tournament has also secured additional sponsorship from 360 Next Gen, ensuring every match will be broadcast live, providing greater exposure for players while helping grow the profile of women’s cricket.
