Rest in peace Juda Ngwenya

Rich Mkhondo, who worked with Ngwenya at The Star, said that Ngwenya was an outstanding photographer.

A well-known South African international photographer Juda Ngwenya was laid to rest on Saturday, October 29 at Rondebult Cemetery, after a service at Rhema Church in Randburg on Saturday.

The Star newspaper reported that Ngwenya (66) collapsed while jogging in the morning at his home in Leondale, Germiston. He died in hospital six days later, after not regaining consciousness from what was suspected to be a stroke. Ngwenya worked at The Star in the early 1980s. After leaving The Star, he joined Reuters where he rose through the ranks to become the agency’s chief photographer for southern Africa in 1999.

One of his notable achievements was being chosen to be a judge of the World Press Photos in the Netherlands.

The Star further reported that at the funeral friends recalled the times they had spent covering news stories with Ngwenya.

Ngwenya left behind his wife Mwelase and children Nkanyezi, Ntombikayise, Vusi and Bathabile.
