Gauteng committee urges stronger action as illegal firearms fuel rise in gun violence

The Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s safety committee has called for urgent measures to curb the circulation of illegal guns following a mass shooting in Tshwane and the killing of a commission witness.

The Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety has expressed grave concern over the rise in gun violence across the province, following two high-profile incidents reported over the weekend.

According to the South African Government News Agency, the committee condemned the mass shooting in Saulsville, Pretoria, which left 11 people dead and 14 others injured. Among those killed were three minors and several women.

In a statement, the committee described the tragedy as ‘a devastating reminder of the urgent need to remove illegal firearms from communities’, adding its condolences to the affected families and wishing the injured a full recovery.

The committee said the incident reflects a troubling increase in the circulation of illegal guns, enabling violent crimes that place residents at constant risk.

It also raised alarm over the murder of a witness linked to the Madlanga Commission, who was shot outside his home. Reports indicate that an AK-47 rifle was used in the attack.

The committee said the killing underscores the need to strengthen efforts to clamp down on high-calibre weapons used in organised and targeted crime.

It has called on police to act swiftly to apprehend suspects in both incidents and urged communities to assist law enforcement.

“The proliferation of illegal firearms threatens the safety and well-being of everyone in Gauteng. We need strong partnerships between communities, law enforcement and government to disrupt the networks supplying these weapons,” the statement read.

The committee reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for a safer and gun-free province.
