Grandparents celebrate Heritage Day in MacKenzieville

The ALMAC Old Age Home in MacKenzieville played host to a celebration of Heritage Day on September 23.
“The prolonged alliance between ALMAC Old Age Home and AVH Projects (sponsors of the event) will focus on our grandmothers and grandfathers – the carriers of our living heritage” says ALMAC’s general manager and spokesperson, Lynese Hassiem.
ALMAC believes that older people are valuable and despite common perceptions, actively contribute to the society and economy. They work with elderly people on a daily basis and their life stories inspired them to conceptualise this event. “Coming from all walks of life, demographics and circumstances, they have lived through war, apartheid, reconciliation, democracy as well as the trials and tribulations of their everyday lives. Their stories are not exceptional or glamorous or even exciting, but are real lives that the majority of us could relate to. ALMAC perceives it as their duty to uplift the elderly and showcase their stories and heritage” says Lynese.
