Elderly woman (65) raped and murdered

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the discovery of an elderly woman’s body in an abandoned building.
Elsie Kaptain (65) lived in the dilapidated building behind the Home Affairs offices in 80 Northern Road, together with other homeless people where she was sexually assaulted and murdered on October 10.
Magdalena Pieterse who also resides in the building and was a close friend of Elsie, said she met the young man who was arrested the previous evening which Elsie introduced as her nephew.
“I did not recognise the man and was concerned about Elsie’s safety from the moment I met him”, Magdalena said.
“As part of my daily routine I made my way to Elsie’s sleeping quarters at 07:30 on October 10. As I entered her sleeping quarters, I found her body on the ground with an empty glass bottle covered in blood next to her. I contacted Ekurhuleni Fire and Rescue who arrived on the scene at 07:50”, Magdalena stated.
SAPS Nigel responded to a report at 08:00 that a body of an elderly woman was found behind the Home Affairs offices in 80 Northern Road.
“On our arrival we noticed the deceased on the floor next to her bed. It seems as if she was sexually assaulted before she passed away. The deceased was pronounced dead by Ekurhuleni Fire and Rescue before SAPS Nigel arrived on the scene”, W/O Madeleine von Wielligh, SAPS Nigel spokesperson said.
The cause of death has not yet been confirmed, with investigations underway.
The accused appeared in court on October 13 where his application for bail was denied.
His court case has been postponed for further investigation and will face charges of rape and murder.
