Woman dies in car accident

One woman has died and three people required emergency care from paramedics before being transferred to a trauma centre, following a collision involving five vehicles on the Heidelberg/Nigel Road and Rhodes Avenue intersection on November 12.
Ekurhuleni Emergency Services responded to reports of a Toyota Land Cruiser that collided with a Yaris flinging the Yaris into three other vehicles at 10:30.
According to eyewitnesses, the Yaris travelled from Heidelberg and turned onto Rhodes Avenue when they were broadsided by a Land Cruiser travelling from Springs. The impact propelled the Yaris into a Nissan Juke, Isuzu bakkie and Volkswagen Polo that was stationary at the traffic light.
Driver of the Polo, Tanya Naudé said there were nine people involved in the life-threatening situation, four of which required immediate medical attention.
A female passenger (35) was flung from the Yaris into two stationary vehicles.
Tanya said she was at the traffic light on her way to turn right onto the Nigel/Springs Road when the collision occurred.
“I remember something hitting my windscreen and the bakkie next to me. I later realised it was the woman from the Yaris”, Tanya said.
Emergency services found the woman ten metres from the vehicle in a critical condition.
She apparently went into cardiac arrest and despite the best efforts of the paramedics, nothing could be done to save her and she was confirmed dead on the scene.
Three male passengers travelling in the Yaris sustained serious injuries and were attended to by paramedics, while passengers from the Juke, bakkie and Polo suffered no significant injuries.
The driver and passenger of the Land Cruiser also sustained no serious injuries.
The three seriously injured male passengers were transported to Heidelberg Hospital.
A case of culpable homicide has been opened with further investigations underway.
