A section of Hendrik Verwoerd Street caved in after a water pipe burst on December 13. The pipe burst disrupted traffic on one side of the road, forcing Nigel Emergency Services personnel to step in to regulate traffic flow.
The burst led to water logging in the area, water also entered some shops. Drinking water supply to Nigel CBD area was disrupted. Officials from Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality inspected the spot and initiated the repair process.
It is reported that the pipe was several years old. The burst initially led to a small hole in the road but soon a bigger crater formed and the road caved in.
According to EMM the pipe burst is extensive and new piping will need to be installed.
