No order on New Year’s Day

Fishermen were left with no choice but to leave Nigel Dam on New Year’s Day as Duduza partygoers swarmed the park around 10:00.
According to Johnny Grobler, the partygoers arrived in large groups with loud music and alcohol. He and his friends decided to leave the property for the safety of their families.
“I returned to the dam shortly after 12:00 and found even more disorder. Children were shooting off fireworks while holding it in their hands. Others were throwing bottles into the dam and some managed to pull down a street light for no reason”, Johnny said.
“It was total mayhem”, he added.
As residents formed a group outside the park, Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) officers arrived to install some form of order.
“The party goers settled down shortly after the arrival of EMPD officers, but damage was already caused to the property”, Johnny reported.
“Another concern was that I did not notice EMPD officers pulling off any vehicles to ensure drivers are sober and able to drive”, he added.
Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality deployed workers the following morning to clean the property and its surroundings.
