The initiative to launch a number of satellite drivers licence testing centres (DLTC) across the Gauteng province to equip high school learners with driving knowledge while they are still in school, is brought to communities by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) in partnership with the Gauteng Provincial Department of Education.
The satellite centres also offer services such as the renewal of motor vehicle licences, application for renewal of drivers licences and the renewal of public driving permits to the community at large, at normal municipal licensing tariffs.

“Learners are set to receive their learner drivers licence for free, which will be valid for a period of two years. The aim of the project is to instil the culture of adhering to the rules of the road in young people’s minds as well as to do away with the irregularities of acquiring drivers licences,” EMM spokesperson Themba Gadebe said in a press release.

With the Department of Education being the financial muscle for the project, the DLTCs will offer professional services such as the applications for learners licences and issuing of learners licences, including learners licence classes for the scholars.

“Having a drivers licence and being able to operate a motor vehicle is no longer a luxury, it has become a requirement for securing employment opportunities.” Themba said.

The DLTC’s operating hours are from 08:00 until 15:00 during weekdays, and they also operate on Saturdays from 08:00 until 12:00 so as to accommodate the scholars. The centres close on the last Saturday of every month.
