SAPS must step up operations in Alrapark, says DA

ALRAPARK - Residents are suffering under the yoke of rampant drug related crimes and criminal operations, while the SAPS satellite police station only operates during office hours.

This according to a press release by Glenda Steyn, head of the DA in Gauteng on September 23.
“In a written response, Gauteng community safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane and SAPS revealed that the satellite police station in Alrapark will continue to operate during office hours only, despite repeated community requests for a 24-hour satellite police station,” Steyn said.

According to the 2013/14 crime statistics, SAPS Nigel reported a 41% increase in drug-related crimes from previous years. The DA said Alrapark became a crime hot spot over the years and added that the absence of after hour’s police officers after will see crime statistics skyrocket in the years to come.

Local DA councillor Wally Labuschagne confirmed this and said the only solution to this impending crisis is to step up visible policing in the area 24 hours a day, every day of the week. He added that the increased police presence must be complemented by regular intensive crime prevention operations to send a strong message to criminals that their days of doing crime with impunity are over.

In closing, the DA said it will engage with MEC Nkosi-Malobane and Gauteng Provincial Police Commissioner Lt Gen Lesetja Mothiba to urgently request increased police patrols and intensive police operations in Alrapark.

“The DA will continue to lead the fight against crime and criminals in our communities,” Steyn said.
