According to his brother-in-law Jorge, the 50 year old Nigel resident and owner of Pick n Pay in Strubenvale was on his way home, after he had returned from an overseas trip earlier that day.

Ekurhuleni’s Disaster and Emergency Services spokesman William Ntladi said preliminary information on the scene indicated that Manny crashed into the side of an interlink truck as it was turning into the Vetsak intersection on the R51. “He died instantly,” Ntladi stated.

When paramedics from Heidelberg Medic Volunteers and rescue workers from Ekurhuleni Emergency Services arrived, Manny was unresponsive and trapped behind the steering wheel of his vehicle.

Applying hydraulic equipment (jaws of life) to cut open the wreck, rescue personnel worked continuously for hours to free his body. Severely traumatised family members were taken to hospital for shock treatment.

The truck driver was unharmed but received treatment for shock by the paramedics. The cause of the accident will be investigated by Ekurhuleni Metro Police.

Manny was a well-known businessman in the communities of Nigel and Springs. Jorge described him as a caring family man and one of the kindest people he had ever known. Manny leaves behind his wife Ana and daughters Alex and Daniella.

Well-known businessman Manny Caldeira was killed in a collision with a truck on the Vetsak intersection on the R51 on October 29. He was the owner of Pick n Pay in Strubenvale.

The family has thanked Ekurhuleni Emergency Services, Nigel CPF, Heidelberg Medical Volunteers and Nigel Metro Police for their swift response and assistance. They also thanked the communities of Nigel and Springs for the messages of condolences, flowers, telephone calls and visits.
