Five people die in road carnage on the R23
Three accidents on the same road outside Heidelberg keeps medics and police busy

Five people died in two accidents on the R23 outside Heidelberg this past weekend. A third accident also occurred on the same road, but no one was seriously injured.
The first accident happened on Friday (October 30) at around 22:50 close to the Spookbrug/Balfour road intersection. Three occupants in a Volkswagen Golf with a Mpumalanga registration collided head on with a Toyota Corolla. All three occupants was declared dead on the scene. The driver of the Toyota was taken to Heidelberg Hospital.

Around 00:30 police on the first scene were called to another accident just kilometres away (direction Balfour) where a bakkie and trailer were involved in an accident with a Toyota Corolla.
Nobody was seriously injured, but the driver of the Toyota was taken into custody for driving without a license.
On Sunday morning at around 02:25 a Volkswagen Golf and a Nissan bakkie was involved in a head on collision near the Unie Street bridge and the Kloof Estate on the R23.
The driver of the bakkie died instantly and his passenger had to be rescued by residents when the vehicle caught fire. She was taken by helicopter to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital with serious injuries. One person in the Golf was also declared dead on the scene.
