No place for drugs in Duduza
DUDUZA -Drug abuse is the compulsive excessive and self-damaging use of habit forming drugs or substances, leading to addiction or dependence, serious physiological or psychological damage and death.
This was one of the strong messages conveyed by the Nigel Local Drug Action Committee (NLDAC) during a substance abuse awareness and prevention campaign that was held at Duduza Resource Centre on December 3.
NLDAC is a non-profit organisation which is not funded by government, but supported by various stakeholders such as SANCA, the Gauteng Department of Social Development, Gauteng Province Community Safety, National Department Correctional Service, South African Police Service and Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department.
The purpose of the campaign was not only to raise awareness as to the crippling effect of drugs and the social ills caused by substance abuse, but also to produce new strategies in preventing the widespread abuse of drugs and alcohol in small communities.
After the official opening and welcoming, former drug addict Sibusiseshle Molefe took to the stage to share his story through a lyrical performance, whereafter two local street dancers Amapansula amancane, captured the attention of the audience with a lively and rhythmic dance performance.
Motivational speaker Mthuthuzeli Skosana then addressed the audience and elaborated on the fact that alcohol and drug abuse can and will kill eventually. He described the devastating effects of drugs such as crystal meth, tik, nyaope and whoonga and he also advised parents and substance abusers where to get help.
The programme concluded with another strong message by Skosana, saying:
“It is not a question of if, but when your child becomes involved in drugs. Be prepared, be informed, but most importantly, be preventive.”
