Khanya Lesedi Secondary School is to become a School of Sports in 2019

Currently the school has 1340 learners and 121 new applications were received for next year’s sports school.

The transition of the sports fields will start early 2019 and accommodate mobile poles for netball, goalposts for soccer as well as volley ball nets. A pavillion with synthetic netball courts, rugby- and soccer field as well as tennis and combi-courts will be erected.

Mr Emmanuel Nkabinde (sports manager of the school) said that as time unfolds, accommodation for learners outside Heidelberg will be erected.

“The success or failure of the project will depend on the candidate that will drive the project. Leadership coordinating and organising is key abilities as sports manager,” Nkabinde said. The school only accommodates Grade 8 to 10.

The Gauteng Department of Education’s spokesperson Steve Mabona confirmed in a statement that “Khanya Lesedi Secondary School is one of 17 schools which have been gazetted for focused specialised education in the province. In terms of Provincial Notice 747 of 2018, Khanya Lesedi Secondary School will provide education with a specialised focus on sports from 2019. This initiative will contribute to the development of South Africa’s future generation of leaders in sports.”
