Residents concerned about construction of more cellular towers

NIGEL – Over the past few years, residents have expressed concern that living, working, or going to school near a cellular towers might increase the risk of cancer or other health problems.
Local resident Jesse Moodley recently came across a hidden notice in an open area in Flip de Bruin Street (next to the AP Kerk), in which application is made by Andries Odendaal from SA Towers (Pty) Ltd the City of Ekurhuleni to construct a cellular phone mast and base station on portion 1 of Erf 1134, Visagiepark. Moodley said she was firstly concerned about the fact that the notice is hidden from the public eye and secondly about the fact that there are already several cellular towers in the area.
“There is already a cellular tower on the AP Kerk premises and several others in close proximity. Now they want to erect another one here. Does anyone really know how the radiation will affect us?” she asked.
The notice further states that any person who wishes to object against the construction of a cellular mast and base station, can do so in writing by sending a formal letter of objection to the Chief Building Inspector: Department City Development, PO Box 23, Nigel, 1490 no later than February 28. The reference number is SAT0161.
Why should residents object and what is the main concern?
In theory, there are some important points that would argue against cellular phone towers being able to cause cancer. According to research, the microwaves from cell phone towers can interfere with your body’s own EMFs, causing a variety of potential health problems, including headaches, memory loss, and cardiovascular stress to name a few. This information was provided in a German study cited at www.EMF-Health.com, which is a site devoted to exposing hazards associated with electromagnetic frequencies from cell phone towers and other sources.
According to the experts in the field, the radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation they transmit and receive is quite weak. A big UK study that included over 100 000 people has recently been set up to follow and monitor healthy people to determine if mobile phone use really do affect their cancer risk.
Until date however, there is no good explanation as to how mobile phones could cause cancer nor is there any strong or consistent evidence that mobile phone use increases the risk of getting brain cancer or other head tumors.
