Happiness Primary School helping unemployed parents

Happiness Primary School launched its gardening programme on June 3 with the help of Food and Trees For Africa who sponsored the establishment of the garden and some crops to make a start. “The garden has always been there, but it wasn’t attended to when our gardener left the school. A group of learners tried to revive the garden, but was unsuccessful. The school finally decided to use the garden in a positive way for the entire community,” Mrs Gama (principal) said. The soil is fertile and the area is safe, because they have security guards patrolling the area.

 
The programme is a win-win situation between the parents, school and learners. According to Mrs Gama, 90% of the learners’ parents are unemployed. That means that most of the learners solely rely on the school’s food scheme for meals. The plan of the garden programme is to grow crops from the garden until it is ready to harvest. The school will then use the crops to help with the feeding scheme and learners will then take meals home where parents will also be able to eat, and as the garden expands, some of the crops will be sold and profits will be split between the parents and the school.
