Heritage assocation plans to honour Tshungu with formal plaque
The temporary plaque was installed in October 2018 and it was to honour Justus Tshungu for giving Ratanda its name over 60 years ago.
Members of Heidelberg Heritage Association (HHA) held their monthly meeting on May 22 at the Old Jail where the installation of the blue plaque in Ratanda that hasn’t been reinstalled after the temporary plaque was stolen, was discussed.
Hendrik Brits (chairman) welcomed everyone and began the discussion of the blue plaque in Ratanda. According to Flip Minnaar (public relations officer), the temporary blue plaque that was installed outside of the Ratanda Community centre, was stolen.
The temporary plaque was installed in October 2018 and it was to honour Justus Tshungu for giving Ratanda its name over 60 years ago. Now they have to find a new location where it is safe to install the permanent plaque.
A decision was made that the HHA will approach Lesedi Local Municipal Council (LLMC) for approval to mount the plaque inside the Ratanda Community Centre. If agreed, the plaque will be unveiled on September 24 (Heritage Day).
The Old Jail in Jordaan Street’s roof was another topic of discussion. The HHA contemplated whether the Old Jail needed updating and the roof repaired and a final decision still hasn’t been made. The HHA wants the Old Jail to be recognised as a heritage site, but there are certain difficulties with the process.
