Hot pizzas and fun evening make Nigel Rotary’s fundraiser a success
Every year the Nigel Rotary Club, assisted by the Nigel Rotary Anns and their Interact Club members, hand out blankets to designated local charity organisations.
The Rotary Club and Rotary Anns of Nigel hosted a pizza night on May 17 at the Nigel Italian Club. The event was held to raise funds for various projects supported by the Rotarians. One of these projects is Sunfield Fortuna Home for the Infirm, where there are more than 90 mentally and physically disabled persons ranging from 18 years to 72 years of age.
The Rotarians have recently restored a vegetable tunnel at the home. This enables them to grow their own vegetables and to be self-sufficient and to sell the excess produce for income. The Rotary Anns supply the residents annually with toiletry packages. They also visit the home every three months and treat the residents to cake and snacks.
Nigel Rotary Club also sends four learners annually from each high school in Nigel to their Rotary Youth Leadership Awards programme, where learners are prepared for after school responsibilities. This is a two day course.
Nigel Rotary Club has a Maths Incentive Scheme operating in two local high schools with the intention to encourage those who are weak in maths to improve their maths.
Every year the Nigel Rotary Club, assisted by the Nigel Rotary Anns and their Interact Club members, hand out blankets to designated local charity organisations. They also have wheelchairs available for patients who require a wheelchair for a limited period of time. These may be applied for at Nigel Rotary Club or from the Nigel Rotary Anns.
Nigel Rotary Anns also run a “Knitted Knockers” project. The Knockers are a substitute for prosthesis for mastectomy patients. The Nigel Rotary Anns also supply and donate sheets, towels and slippers to various old age and children’s homes.
The Rotarians are grateful to those who attended their pizza evening. Nigel Rotary Club and Nigel Rotary Anns are not a charity organisation and all of their members are volunteers and serve their fellow beings as their motto states – “Service above Self”.
All funds raised are redirected into the local community where and when the need arises. The Rotary Club of Nigel is as a PBO (public benefit organisation) and NPO (non-profit organisation) registered.
