Zenzele residents’ woes soon to be over
A town planning service provider was appointed by Sasol to carry out the process of formalisation of the Zenzele Informal settlement on behalf of Dipaleseng Local Municipality with about 800 properties anticipated.
It was back in 2006 when the community of Nthoroane began to illegally invade a portion of land belonging to Sizanani Communal Property Association which measures ± 216 hectares near the existing Nthoroane Township. As in most informal settlements, the provision of basic services then becomes a challenge for both the community and the local authority concerned.
Dipaleseng Local Municipality is however pleased that the process of formalising the Zenzele Informal settlement in Nthoroane has reached advanced stages as the pegging out of 1 300 stands will commence at the beginning of July. Although this number of stands will be pegged out, only 800 stands will be provided with water and sanitation reticulation for now.
This initiative comes as a result of the upgrading of the Waste Water Treatment Plant as well as the sewer reticulation projects within the vicinity of Nthoroane, undertaken by Sasol as an implementing agent for the municipality as part of Sasol’s Social Labour Plan.

The housing backlog in the area is about 1 300 and as such, the municipality has made a further request to Sasol to accommodate the shortfall of about 500 stands, which has also been approved.
The contractor was introduced to the municipality a year ago. However the process was dependent of the land availability agreement between CPA and Dipaleseng while the issue of the release of state owned-land was being finalised for the purpose of land swap between the two parties.
Sizanani CPA has since granted the municipality, contractors and consultants access to the land in question to proceed with the projects. Sizanani CPA has also granted the municipality a servitude over the property for constructing a sewer pipeline network, sewer pump stations, upgrading of a waste water treatment and formalisation of the Zenzele Informal settlement on terms and conditions acceptable to the parties.
The municipality looks forwards to continued cooperation from all stakeholders to realise the swift and smooth completion of this process. Further engagements with community members, particularly those affected will be maintained by the institution.
