Do not leave food for refuse removal workers
This could contribute to the rapid spread of Covid-19.
Messages have recently circulated on social media in which residents are asked to put sealed tins of food on their wheely-bins to thank the refuse removers for their work.
According to Andre du Plessis (local resident) these messages should be ignored as it will create a number of problems.
“The tins may be left in the sun for up to five hours or longer. This is an easy way to spread the virus as the refuse removal staff handles refuse bins from different households. These workers do not have sanitisers to constantly keep their hands clean. If 200 tins are collected per truck per day, it means 10 workers are going to take home 220 tins of food each,” Du Plessis added.
He also stated that there were instances in the past in the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) where some bins were damaged or not emptied due to no compensation.
“This will create a scenario where only bins with tins will get emptied. We do not know how this could contribute to the spread of Covid-19. We cannot afford to take chances during the lockdown period. It is best to not put tin food on your dustbins,” Du Plessis concluded.
