The A to Z of Back-2-School

The department of basic education confirmed that other grades will return to school on July 6.

The following Grades will return: pre-Grade R; Grade R; Grade 1; Grade 2; Grade 3; Grade 6; Grade 10 and Grade 11. The announcement was made by basic education minister Angie Motshekga on June 24.

Other learners expected to return on 6 July are schools of skill: years 2 and 3; schools for learners with severe intellectual disabilities: Grades R, 1, 2, 3 and final year (occupational); schools with learners with severe and profound intellectual disabilities: years 1-3 and schools with autistic learners: junior group (below 13 years) and final year (18 years and above).

Motshekga said the department was working hard to make sure all schools are Covid-19 compliant before receiving learners.

The Corona Virus pandemic brought about a period of enormous change, uncertainty and immediate implementation of measures previously not known. Kids at school were suddenly and unexpectedly kept from any school activities, after mural activities or any social interaction with friends. With the schools suddenly closed, kids had little time to say goodbye to friends or teachers and had to adapt to a new way of life very quickly.

Although homeschooling was encouraged during lockdown, it did come with difficulties such as accessibility to the internet, lack of parental guidance for parents performing essential services and could not work from home.  Having a break from school for more than 60 days was fun for some kids with the inception of lockdown, however, not being able to do sport, extramural activities or any social interaction with friends brought forth a type of separation anxiety.

After the easing of lockdown level 3 and with 98% of children returning to school, there are additional challenges awaiting teachers and parents alike. School children love playing in groups, hugging their best friends, even sharing lunch box treats; all of which is no longer allowed. Besides the social restrictions, going back to school also means working 3 times as hard to catch up on schoolwork to ensure the 2020 curriculum will be completed in time.

Attending school daily provides a familiar routine and discipline for children.  Something that is secure and constant in their lives. With the disruption caused by COVID 19, it can be very unsettling, especially for younger children. Returning to school will be a period of change for all children; both primary and tertiary levels. They may only be at school for a couple of days a week or be kept in small groups, they may not be able to socialise with their friends or use school equipment and resources as before. They may have a different teacher and teaching assistants or be in a different classroom.

HERAUT would like to ensure that all our kids adapt to this change with ease and comfort.

We are doing a BACK TO SCHOOL feature page and offering advertising space to any specialised services such as counsellors, child psychologists or similar therapies. The feature page also allows for individuals or business supplying preventative items like face shields, masks or immune boosters to advertise their offerings.

The BACK TO SCHOOL feature is due for publication 8 July.

If you want to advertise your offering in this feature, get in touch with us as soon as possible.
