According to Sgt Nellie Dwaba (spokesperson) the complainant is a 31-year-old foreign national female who told police that she was at her house in Hutchinson Street around 14:00 when she received a visit from her ex-husband (against whom she had filed a restraining order previously).
The complainant told police that the ex-husband was insisting they get back together, but she denied him access to her residence and told him to leave. She immediately reported the incident to the police, as she feared for her life.
“She later received a telephone call from her boyfriend (Chris Mawtse) who asked if he could visit her that evening. The complainant however, told him not to visit her that evening, as the ex-husband was in the area and she feared for both their lives,” Sgt Dwaba said.
The ex-husband reportedly returned to her house around 20:00 and the complainant once again told him to leave. She received a cellphone message from Mawtse around 21:30, saying he was on his way to see her.
“The complainant said she heard noises and footsteps and went outside to investigate. She saw two people in the dark and recognised both her ex-husband and her boyfriend. The next moment she saw her ex-husband running away, while her boyfriend was holding his chest.”
When she approached him, her boyfriend collapsed to the ground. He was later declared deceased by emergency services personnel and the suspect was arrested by the police. He is being charged with murder and appeared in Nigel Magistrate’s Court.
