Mozambican-style food found a place in Heidelberg

From kitchen manager at an upmarket hotel in KwaZulu-Natal to group executive for a hotel in Sandton, Miguel Cidrais is now the proud owner and chef of Mozambican restaurant Die Skip based between Heidelberg and Nigel.

From the age of 16, Miguel tested his love for cooking in his parents’ kitchen and at a home economics class at school.

When asked what defines a Mozambican dining experience, Miguel answered: “All my dishes are cooked fresh from scratch, using only the best spices and chilies I import from Mozambique.”

Miguel visited some of the top-rated restaurants in Mozambique and believes that he has mastered this style of cooking to the tee.

“I design food around real Mozambican authenticity and use specific techniques I mastered over the years to bring out the taste and flavour of each dish,” Miguel said.

Miguel and his family jointly own Die Skip Mozambican Restaurant, which opened three months ago and already attracts weekly visitors from the north of Johannesburg.

Freshly prepared and grilled hake prepared the Mozambican way.

“We offer free Wi-Fi and welcome local business people who want to enjoy a good meal while working. Our pizza oven is ready and our beach bar, complete with sea-sand and cocktails, will be ready on December 1,” Miguel added.

Die Skip Mozambican Restaurant prepares between 100 and 150 prego’s per day and believes that top-quality food, excellent service and good prices are the main attraction.

“We are very pleased to settle in the Heidelberg/Nigel area and look forward to bring Mozambique to the town,” Miquel concluded.

With new owners, a new chef and a Mozambican-style cuisine, it seems like Die Skip has finally anchored.

One of the famous dishes is the peri-peri chicken, prepared with spices and chilies imported from Mozambique and basted in a home-made peri-peri sauce.
