Eleven offenders handcuffed on Christmas Eve

From December 24 to the early hours of December 25 in Nigel and Zonkizizwe areas, the EMPD High Speed Enforcement and Drug Enforcement Units officers on crime prevention operations arrested 11 male and female suspects and confiscated narcotics.

Between 8am and 9am in the Nigel area on December 24, three speedsters, facing charges of reckless and negligent driving, were stopped and escorted to the Nigel Police Station by the Speed Enforcement Unit officers.

On Springs Road, which is zoned 80km/h, a 59-year-old man driving a Nissan NP200 light delivery vehicle clocked 137km/h. A woman driving a Toyota Yaris hatchback was nabbed for clocking 142km/h, while another woman driving a Mitsubishi special utility vehicle registered 124km/h on that stretch of road.

Meanwhile, in Zonkizizwe area, between Christmas Eve and Christmas Day just before 1am, the EMPD Drug Enforcement Unit members handcuffed eight suspicious male suspects who had 12 crushed and half Mandrax tablets as well as 18 ziplocks of khat valued at R4 100 and R247 cash. They were cornered at Zones three and five.

They were marched to Zonkizizwe Police Station and are facing charges of possession and possible dealing in illicit substance.

All the detained suspects are expected to appear in the Nigel and Palmridge magistrate’s courts soon.
