I Love Nigel team get hands dirty to restore town
The community organisation I Love Nigel has one goal in mind: to make Nigel great again.
“We strive to become independent and to take back our power. We have already started to clean up our town and we have loads of exciting projects planned for this year to make our town safe and beautiful for all living here,” said Aileen Ceronio, I Love Nigel spokesperson.
The members of I Love Nigel give up their time each Saturday to tackle the task at hand. This group of volunteers are not scared to get their hands dirty and complete their projects with success and loads of positive comments from the community.
One of the successful projects in 2020 was the Town Hall gardens which were cleaned up and turned into an actual garden with flowers blooming.
The streets of Nigel is an ongoing target for the team as they keep everyone informed of where their efforts are needed.
“We are grateful towards the community who supports us. We can’t do it alone and rely on the community to be our eyes and ears. In a short time, our Facebook page grew to over 1 000 people and we are still growing,” Aileen said.
“For us to complete our clean-up and restoration mission, we ask for donations from the residents. All funds go towards our weekly and daily projects. We have to buy material, protective clothing, black bags, petrol for lawnmowers and whatever else we need for the projects we target,” Aileen added.
The John Vorster Stadium was one of the most recent success stories where the team with volunteers from the community got stuck in. The grass was cut, rubbish was removed, the stadium was cleaned and this popular sports facility now looks warm and inviting for any athlete or sporting event.
“We are so grateful to all who spent the day cleaning up and cutting the grass at John Vorster Stadium. It was a mammoth task, but we completed it yet again with success,” Jake Ceronio, the group’s chairperson, said.
“We encourage residents of Nigel to get involved to save our town. If we don’t get involved, our children will have nothing left. We won’t have any decent sports facilities left. The stadium and the pool can still be saved for posterity,” Jake added.
The I Love Nigel team meets every Monday at 6 pm at the Nigel Bowling Club.
