Cambridge face hard match

The match was abandoned after the referee was assaulted.

Cambridge FC faced 11 Experience FC from Kwa-Thema on April 9.

“The clash was seen as a do or die match for that second place playoffs spot in the men’s Regional League SAFA Ekurhuleni,” explained chairperson Ignatius Maphike.

The match began slowly, with Cambridge conceding a goal to the other team only 10 minutes into the game.

Wayne Matle of the Cambridge team scored an equalising goal, ending the first half with a score of 1-1.

In the second half of match the opposing team scored, making the score 2-1 for Experience FC.

Cambridge managed to bounce back, scoring again with only 10 minutes left to play, tying the score at 2-2.
In the very last minutes of the game, the opposing team managed yet another goal, putting them in the lead 3-2.

“The team pushed forward after this, and was awarded a penalty kick after a long ball was placed inside the box and the opposing team created a foul,” said Maphike.

“But the match was abandoned when the opposing team’s players assaulted the referee, who had to be escorted by members of the EMPD.”

“This was not a good scene for football,” said coach Godfrey Hermanus. “These things happen and we need to learn the ref’s decisions are final.”
