Nigel man sentenced to 10 years for brutal domestic violence attack on e-girlfriend
A Nigel man was sentenced to 10 years’ direct imprisonment after assaulting his ex-girlfriend and attempting to set her alight. The SAPS welcomed the ruling, saying it sends a strong message against GBV.
The Nigel SAPS welcomed the conviction and sentencing of a man found guilty of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm under domestic violence circumstances.
Phulane Lawrence Shibe (39) was sentenced to 10 years’ direct imprisonment by the Nigel Regional Court on December 9 following a violent attack on his ex-girlfriend that nearly claimed her life.
According to the SAPS, the incident occurred on October 6, 2024, when Shibe convinced the complainant that he needed to perform a cleansing ceremony at her residence after claiming to have had a troubling vision.
The complainant agreed and allowed him to stay the night, with Shibe sleeping on the couch.
The next day, when the complainant asked Shibe when he intended to leave the house, he became aggressive. He allegedly poured methylated spirits and paraffin over her and threatened that no man would ever look at her again.
The attack escalated when he forced her to the ground while holding matches, intent on setting her alight.
The complainant screamed for help, prompting community members to intervene and rescue her before further harm could be inflicted.
A case of assault GBH under domestic violence was subsequently opened at the Nigel SAPS. Shibe was arrested shortly thereafter and remained in custody until his sentencing.
Nigel SAPS station commander Lieutenant Colonel Louise Droskie praised the outcome of the case and commended the investigating team for their dedication.
She acknowledged the diligent work of Detective Warrant Officer Tebogo Mohlaping from the Nigel detective branch.
The SAPS urges victims of domestic violence to report abuse and seek help, and reassures communities that such crimes are taken seriously and will be pursued through the justice system.
