Lesedi Aerobics Movement leads the fight against obesity
Since 2022, the Lesedi Aerobics Movement has been transforming lives in Ratanda through free fitness sessions, community marathons, and wellness programmes.
The Lesedi Aerobics Movement has been inspiring residents of Ratanda and surrounding areas to live healthier, more active lives since its founding in January 2022.
The NPO, established by three local fitness teams, hosts free bootcamp and aerobics marathon events as part of its mission to fight obesity and promote wellness in the community.
According to one founder, Moeketsi Sebiloane, the movement was born out of a shared passion for health and fitness.

“Our goal has always been to create a platform where everyone, regardless of age or fitness level, can gather and improve their health. We wanted to show that exercise does not have to be expensive or exclusive; it is something the entire community can enjoy,” he said.
Despite limited resources, Sebiloane said the movement has seen an overwhelming response from residents.
“People are showing up, encouraging one another, and taking their health seriously. We know that obesity is a serious problem, but instead of just talking about it, we are doing something about it. Our sessions are more than just exercise. They are about building a culture of health in Lesedi,” he said.
The group has also formed partnerships with other fitness clubs, including Exquisite Fitness Club from Duduza and Active Achievers Club from Balfour, fostering regional cooperation and support.
However, Sebiloane highlighted some challenges.

“We do everything outdoors, and when it rains, we have to stop. It is disheartening, especially when people are motivated. We need an indoor venue so we can continue promoting this lifestyle without interruption. We also struggle with a shortage of equipment and rely on three annual fundraising events,” he said.
The movement hopes to expand its outreach by partnering with local primary schools to introduce child-focused wellness programmes and inspire the next generation of fitness leaders.
“We want to see more young people joining, learning about healthy living, and maybe becoming instructors one day. Our dream is to see Lesedi become one of the healthiest communities in the country,” he said.
