Marievale Engineers Golf Club launches exciting new disc golf format
The historic Marievale Engineers Golf Club has unveiled a new disc golf format, offering families and outdoor lovers a fresh, relaxing way to enjoy the nine-hole course just outside Nigel.
Just outside Nigel, the Marievale Engineers Golf Club is pioneering a fresh way to enjoy the sport on the East Rand.
As one of only two golf clubs still located on military grounds in SA, Marievale now offers a unique twist on traditional golf with its newly introduced disc golf format.

The nine-hole course launched the format on November 22. Unlike conventional golf, where four players per team use clubs and balls, disc golf requires players to throw a frisbee-like disc from the tee and continue playing until the target tower at each hole is “bagged”.
Once completed, the team moves to the next hole. There are no handicaps, meaning everyone starts on equal footing and builds their skill as they go.

The club, which closed in 2016, has stood dormant for years. Now, Gavin Kruger and his team are working to revitalise the course and create a family-friendly outdoor destination. Until the launch of disc golf, the grounds were sustained mainly by the on-site bar and takeaway restaurant.
“We want families to come out, have a good time and enjoy the open air in a relaxing new sport at a beautiful venue,” said Kruger.
